Anyhow today we still remember this amazing british singer and composer who sang different musical genders as jazz, R&B, soul and ska, and who’s talent was and will always be admirable.
“Just friends” is a song featured in her second album called “Back to Black”
for which she won 5 Grammys (!)
The black and white format of the official music video of today’s song take us a little backwards to her golden days and the fast secuency at the beginning of it kind of remind us how fast her life was, always moving and enjoying, singing with a drink in her hand and a smile in her face, delighting the audience with her unique voice while she danced in her singular way.
This video highlights aswell the original traits of this woman: her several tattoos, her beehive hairstyle, her intense black eye liner… and reminds us that she didn’t need much movement to express all her feelings, with just her eyes and her voice she could send a clear message even without trying.
Fun fact: She was Alex Clare girlfriend for a year and if I’m right you can even watch him with her in today’s video while he kisses her around minute 2:28 at the Grammy’s ceremony ❤
Mournfully, she was alcoholic and that which she enjoyed too much ended with her life. But she knew she had a problem, or another trait, so she sang about it too as you’ll listen in her lyrics where she’s probably sharing the true story of a relationship of hers…
…And her simple but honest lyrics :
When will we get the time to be just friends
It’s never safe for us not even in the evening
‘cos I’ve been drinking
Not in the morning where your shit works
It’s always dangerous when everybody’s sleeping
And I’ve been thinking
Can we be alone…?
When will we get the time to be just friends…?
And no I’m not ashamed but the guilt will kill you
If she don’t first
I’ll never love you like her
Though we need to find the time
To just do this shit together
‘For it gets worse
I wanna touch you
But that just hurts
When will we get the time to be just friends, just friends
